The 2017-2018 Season is a celebration of music’s role in illuminating the human spirit. The Chorale will present three major concerts, SOARING SPIRIT, LEONARD BERNSTEIN AT 100, and TOTAL PRAISE featuring a presentation of Robert Ray’s Gospel Mass.

SOARING SPIRIT demonstrates musical expression of the human spiritual experience with an array of styles representative of many cultures. Such pieces as Britten’s Festival Te Deum, Rachmaninoff’s “All-Night Vigil” (performed in Russian), spirituals by Moses Hogan, sacred motets by Brahms, and excerpts from Haydn’s Creation showcase the many faces of Christianity while Eric Whitacre’s Her Sacred Spirit Soars honors classical muses à la Shakespearean era tributes to Elizabeth I. It will also showcase a composition by Alabamian Dr. John Ratledge, “Uncertainty-A Prayer.”

LEONARD BERNSTEIN AT 100 is part of a global celebration of the legendary composer and conductor’s 100th birthday. Beginning August 25, 2017 until August 25, 2019, arts organizations around the world are hosting events and performances honoring Bernstein’s body of work. Our celebration will include performances of his Chichester Psalms, excerpts from Candide and West Side Story, and more.

The Chorale seeks to continue last season’s message of peace and harmony and connect to our diverse community through TOTAL PRAISE with joyful choruses of gospel-inspired songs and performances of Robert Ray’s Gospel Mass, which premiered in 1979. Ray’s composition arose out of the Second Vatican Council’s decision to hold Masses in host countries’ native languages instead of Latin - allowing all to fully participate - and it is with this spirit we invite you to engage with The Chorale this season.

Let me encourage you to join us for the entire season by purchasing a PREMIUM SEASON TICKET which not only gets you a great value, but also the best seats in the house for all of our concerts!
